Tyrantis by Rixshaw Tyrantis by Rixshaw
A belated birthday drawing for :icontyrantisterror: of his monster hero, Tyrantis.

Getting Tyrantis to look exactly right was a genuine challenge, a couple false starts resulted in heads that were too small or head spikes that were arranged wrong. These head spikes were especially important to get right, and I think really sell the idea that he's a mutated retrosaur. It's easy to image that all the ornamentation could have been the result of a hormone imbalance, a side effect of his mutation which resulted in excess growth in certain areas which is evident throughout his physiology, such as the spikes along his arm and along his back, and possibly the third finger, if this were a tyrannosaur.

Thinking of fixing this up a little bit later.

I guess this relates more to your recent art in general and not just this piece, but I love what you've been doing with simple lines and shading. You create a very strong sense of texture and mass without having to go into much detail, and I think it looks great. I'm really digging what you've done with the Pathogen corpse and all the organs coming to life, I can really tell you had fun there. I'm sure Will will enjoy this!

Thanks and yes, Pathogen was a fun little indulgence. A thing I learned during some classes is that I really love illustrating guts and organic bits,  but I like to keep that restrained.

Oh wow, this is marvelous!  I love the Gwangi-esque musculature you gave him, and the pile of Pathogen parts is a wonderful touch.  Thank you so much!

I'm glad you like it. Drawing a dinosaur in the old retro-style was a lovely exercise. And I've always wanted have a crack at Pathogen, too. Happy birthday!
